Meet The Team

Annie Tang

Annie graduated from the University of Lancaster with a BA Honours in English.  She subsequently embarked on legal studies and studied the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law, York and a legal career ensued in 1995 after she relocated to Hong Kong.  She trained with an international UK law firm in Hong Kong and qualified in 1997 and practised for a number of years with international law firms before switching careers into legal recruitment in 2005.

On joining, she was tasked with heading up the legal recruitment division of a UK listed multinational recruitment company. In that role, she successfully placed many senior level lawyers into in-house as well as law firm sectors across the Asia-Pacific and Greater China regions and she also led her team to place junior to mid level positions.

In 2010, she jointly launched Star Anise, a specialist legal recruitment company, with her brother, Chris.

Chris Tang

Chris read Law at the University of Exeter, England and subsequently studied his Legal Practice Course (LPC) at Nottingham Law School in England.   He trained with a top 20 UK law firm and for 10 years he specialised in Corporate M&A, private equity and capital markets transactions.  His client base included SMEs, entrepreneurs, well known household names, banks, nominated advisors, private equity houses, hedge funds, listed and multi-national companies.  In his last legal role, Chris was a legal director in the Corporate team of a leading national commercial law firm in England  and was actively involved in the recruitment, training and development of legal staff in his firm (including acting as trainee supervisor).

In early 2010, Chris moved to Hong Kong and co-founded Star Anise with his business partner and sister, Annie.  With the emphasis on building closer ties and developing trusted relationships with his clients refined over the years as a corporate M&A lawyer, Chris’s passion is to bring these same exacting service levels to the Hong Kong recruitment industry for the benefit of both clients and candidates alike.

Phyllis Ching

Phyllis spent her formative years in Hong Kong before migrating to Canada where she undertook her secondary and higher education, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Toronto’s York University.

She entered the legal industry as legal assistant in a Toronto law firm before moving to a larger city commercial law firm, working in the real estate and banking teams respectively.  After 14 years in legal practice, Phyllis returned to Hong Kong to join Star Anise as a Consultant, with a focus on legal support staff (including paralegal, company secretarial and compliance) as well as junior qualified legal roles.
