Get to know your recruiter: Christy Ho
Tell us a little bit about you what you do.
My job is two-fold - I help individual people find their dream jobs, and help clients find their ideal employees. I’m also a pseudo-counsellor, career/life coach and professional social media stalker… what can I say…it’s all part of the job!
How did you get into recruitment? Did you always want to be a recruiter?
I kind of fell into it to be honest! I had heard from friends in the industry who told me what recruitment was like, but had never thought about it seriously until I met Michael (who is now my manager) as a candidate looking for legal jobs, and he convinced me to join his team.
I had always wanted to do something that made use of my legal background and my passion for meeting and helping people, so going into legal recruitment just made sense. So, I’m a perfect example of how, by simply arranging a meeting with a Star Anise Consultant, you can land your dream job (everyone take note!).
What are the top 3 things you love about what you do?
- Every day is different.
- Being financially rewarded for the amount of time and effort I put into the job.
- Being in full control of my work schedule, and work life balance!
What’s the biggest challenge you face as a recruiter?
Dealing with people who don’t respect recruiters, and the work that we do. Part of the challenge is to educate them with the processes and level of detail we need to get through in order to help them achieve results for them. There is a very high level of professionalism and people skills required to succeed in recruiting. Often, people don’t see the amount of work and diligence put into working on job assignments.
Another challenge is overcoming the negative stereotype that recruiters can be known for: that we’re sharks, aggressive, and are only looking to meet our next KPI (Key Performance Indicators, or benchmarks). Like any profession out there, there are ‘good eggs’ and ‘bad eggs’ – in my professional and completely unbiased opinion…at Star Anise you can only find good eggs!
How would your colleagues describe you?
Bubbly, talkative, and a blackhole when it comes to snacks in the office (see related gif for actual footage!).
What do you like to do to unwind outside of the office?
Go to the gym, and sleep! I like to get some quality ‘alone-time’, as my job requires me to interact with other people constantly.
Random fact about yourself:
I was a freelance (child) actress on RTHK for 10 years!
Restaurant (& item on the menu)
A difficult question, because I have different favourite restaurants depending on what I’m craving at any one moment. What I’m currently craving is a good pizza, and my current favourite can be found at Ciao Chow in California Tower.
It really depends on my mood…BUT I’m always in the mood for Disney!
For arts and culture: Spain or Italy (and wider Europe)
For the sun and beach: Southeast Asia (If you haven’t been to Koh Rong island in Cambodia, it’s a must go!)
For backpacking: China! (And Asia generally)
Biggest pet peeve?
EASY - when people ‘drag their feet’ (procrastinate in their decision making), or chew loudly.
Three items on your bucket list:
No surprise – all of my 3 items are holiday destinations! In no particular order…
Road tripping across Iceland’s ring road
Backpacking in Kyrgyzstan (if anyone has tips, do share!)
Staying in an over-water bungalow in the Maldives
If you were not a recruiter, what would you doing?
I’d be a pilot. But if I’m being realistic, I would probably be a professional speed eater.
