CV writing: what "meeting people from all walks of life" really means

I’m part of a second generation of Chinese in the UK who grew up doing their homework on the shop counter table whilst frying chips or taking orders for takeaway Chinese food.

Imagine as a 15 year old on the receiving end of a racist tirade because you told them you need to add 50 pence to switch from chicken to (the more pricey) prawns.

Or being hurled abuse or physically attacked by people at 10:30pm after they’d spent the night in a pub. And for the female generation of kids, being leered at and having highly inappropriate suggestive remarks made at you when you’re all alone in the shop at night.

Those dishes could not come out sooner.

And if that’s not enough, you have to endure the daily passive aggressive encounter of having kids at school walking by and shouting out dishes or dish numbers in fake accents.

That is what is meant when they write on their CV, “meeting people from all walks of life.”

So next time you see a CV of a graduate or young professional in which an early job was working in the fast food industry, give them a try, chances are they’ll have built the strongest resilience and tenacity to get things done of any candidates you’ll meet.
