Star Anise wins preferred supplier tender to grow legal team for Hong Kong’s newest regulatory authority

Leading independent legal and compliance recruitment firm Star Anise has been mandated by Hong Kong's Insurance Authority (“IA”) in its hire of two senior legal professionals, following a competitive tender.
The preferred supplier role will see the Hong Kong-based recruitment firm be the exclusive legal recruiter in the independent regulatory body's search for two senior roles in their legal section, a General Counsel and a Senior Legal Counsel, respectively.
The IA was established under the Insurance Companies (Amendment) Ordinance 2015 on 7 December 2015 as a regulatory authority independent of the Hong Kong SAR Government. The new body took over the regulatory functions of the former (Government) Office of the Commission of Insurance on 26 June 2017. The IA is also widely expected to take over the regulation and oversight of all insurance intermediaries from Hong Kong’s existing 3 Self-Regulatory Organisations (“SROs”), and implement a new statutory regulatory and licensing regime by 2019.
These SROs include:
- The Insurance Agents Registration Board;
- The Hong Kong Confederation of Insurance Brokers; and
- Professional Insurance Brokers Association.
The mandate follows hot on the heels of other Hong Kong regulatory bodies who have instructed Star Anise on their legal and compliance hiring requirements.
