As part of Star Anise's aim to provide a more diverse and inclusive culture, we are proud to be one of the first 100+ signatories to Equal Opportunities Commission's Racial Diversity & Inclusion Charter For Employers (the "Charter").

The Charter's aim is to promote the objectives of the anti-discrimination ordinances in Hong Kong by establishing guidelines for the workplace, amongst others, covering the following four key areas: Gender, Disability, Family Status and Race. In respect of the workplace, the ordinances aim to encourage and promote racial diversity and inclusion (D&I), and signatories to the Charter are issued policies and best practice guidelines to implement in their workplace to enable them to further their D&I objectives.

Star Anise has always strived to create a racially inclusive work environment allowing us to create a more diverse workforce with individuals from India, Indonesia, Pakistan, USA, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the UK.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the Charter goals, we have used our best endeavours to participate in events such as:

  • attending webinars discussing racial equality and ethnic minority rights in Hong Kong
  • sharing foods from different cultures
  • raising and enhancing knowledge and appreciation about festivities celebrated by our colleagues such as Eid, Diwali, dragonboating and other festivals
  • engaging in cultural social activities
  • engaging in CSR volunteering activities focusing on ethnic minority and disadvantaged groups

Since signing the Charter in March 2020, apart from undergoing the above, we have achieved the following specific goals with regards our workplace and internal recruitment processes:

  • promoted a colleague from the ethnic minority community
  • hired two interns from the ethnic minority communities

As part of our wider diversity and inclusion initiatives, we have also supported the Hong Kong LGBT+ lawyers' community by hosting a webinar on stress management and become a signatory to EqualLove to support equal treatment for same sex marriage as well as participated in gender equality talks and gender celebration days.

Annie Tang, our co-Managing Director, said "We do not take our pledge to the (EOC) Charter goals lightly and I am delighted that our company has, even before signing the Charter, focused on providing a more diverse and inclusive workplace. We will continue to work on more goals throughout the Charter period and beyond. I am pleased to learn that more companies are considering signing the Charter as well".

About The Equal Opportunities Commission's Racial Diversity & Inclusion Charter

The Equal Opportunities Commission's ("EOC") Racial Diversity & Inclusion Charter recognized our efforts to make all employees of all races feel accepted and included. This Charter was launched in December 2018 and since then, various companies have joined as signatories.

Star Anise Legal is among the first batch of 150 signatories which includes global companies, law firms and social enterprises. EOC provides guidance to the signatories that formulate and implement policies that foster an inclusive work environment.

Interested signatory parties can visit the EOC's website at https://www.eoc.org.hk/EOC/otherproject/embrace_charter/charterindex.aspx
